MYKINS
VINTAGE RACING
This site is dedicated to ALLARD. These handmade, powerful and unique sport cars were once described by ROAD & TRACK magazine as the “battleships of track and boulevard”. Other car nuts referred to them as “English Hotrods”. The most famous Allard was a J2 owned by Tom Carstens and driven by Bill Pollock. The Cadillac engine was built by Vic Edelbrock, Sr., who was able to get the Cad power plant to spit out 280 hp at 6500 rpm. Incredibly, this J2 could go from 0 to a tire-smoking 100 mph in some 20 seconds. Not to shabby for 1951
No
matter what they were called, it is undeniable that the J2 and J2X Allard
dominated road racing in the United States during the early 1950”s.
There were some notable names associated with racing the big horsepower
Allards in those early days: Carroll Shelby, Masten Gregory, John Fitch and the
father of the Corvette, Zora Arkus Duntov.
All went on to greater automotive fame.
The
Allard was the brainchild of Sydney Allard who was born and raised in London,
England. He started by building
“trials” cars for himself. Then
others wanted cars just like his. This
led to a manufacturing process that produced numerous model types over an
eleven-year period between 1945 and 1955. The
most popular model was the J2X, however there were 7 JR models built that were
the fastest and most powerful of all the Allard sport cars. Ironically, they
were the last Allards to come out of the factory.
My
Allard is a K2 roadster and is the street version of the J2 and J2X.
It carries the serial number K3028.
It was one of 119 K2 models built over the 3-year period between 1950 and
1952. It is one of 28 1952 models
built before the K2 was discontinued. I
have owned the K2 since 1960.
